Kapitbahayan sa Kalye Bautista atbp. Lugar, Inc. - KKB in partnership with Renacimiento Manila, after months of anticipation, finally kickstarted the return of walking tours in Quiapo!

Everyone was thrilled to be back at Quiapo as the group of 15 participants were welcomed with fascinated curiosity by the community. The tour was led by Peter Danielle Rallos of KKB and Diego Gabriel Torres of Renacimiento Manila, starting with the San Sebastian Basilica then ending at the Bahay Nakpil Bautista. This partnership aims to promote Quiapo as a potential tourism hub along with the respective programs of each heritage organization showing heritage awareness as a good investment and source of income to local establishments in the area. 

The tour was conducted with strict accordance to COVID-19 health protocols and overall safety with staff trained to deal such an emergency. We plan to improve these tours in the coming months and eventually apply what we've learned to the revival of our own Lakbay Lakaran tours.

Counting how Kasa Boix has lasted through time

ARCHITECTURE

An architecture is a reflection of the expression and values of the people, on what they find important and how they show it in physical form. It shows the art, technology and possibilist during the time it was built and as it has surpassed through time. 

ENVIRONMENT

This is how our ancestors who are our family as a nation in our homeland which is our country, have built and developed our environment for the home of the next generation like us. 

CULTURE

Collective values gathered together become practice in lifestyle and becomes the culture of a group of people. Cult means practice. 

HERITAGE

These values when passed on to another becomes heritage or inherited by another. It becomes what we have in our home, our country.

TOURISM

It is these matters that makes us unique for what we have and how we identify ourselves in a place. It is what makes others curious about us. It is something we can share and celebrate with other people of different values coming together with us to learn about each other and make those differences becomes shared values. By touring places and sharing subjects of interests, others tell us what they see and we learn to become more aware about ourselves, how we stand in our position in relation to others and society. We become self aware. At the same time, others learn about us and they become aware also. It is a way to bridge relations with others as we learn to appreciate each other. 

CONSERVATION

It is important that we share these lessons to the next generations and to other people so that they learn the beauty and hardship of great people that has made these forms of cultural heritage by conserving what we have or our current resources. 

Kasa BOIX

Kasa Boix is a symbol and reminder of these important values that in times of doubt, we remember who we are, what we value, and what we have in our family, ancestors, home, our country. Casa means House. The letter K is a representation of the Filipino language, thus casa becomes Kasa. Most houses are just named after the surname of an owner significant through a certain period, thus Kasa Boix.

Thinking, speaking, and acting on this even in little ways of promotion and appreciation puts forward to express what we believe in, who we have become, our values, and what we find important. So that others may benefit from the knowledge and awareness of what has been in the record and of history as development of the people. So that they may do the same in their own family, home, and country. 

ENTERPISE

Our heritage is intangible and tangible. Intangible are those like song, dance, poems. Tangible is those material items such as architecture, food, clothes, and artwork. Our ancestors made them as a form of expression and development of scientific knowledge to serve the public aligning to their needs and upliftment. It promotes enterprise and economy - supply and demand for our resources.

Awareness of others and ourselves is a journey.

 During the time we explore new things and start to discover our own neighborhood, we grow our engagement in different ways with the local communities. It can be a rewarding experience and help us discover and appreciate not only about others but ourselves too as we learn how our skills and interest can serve other people for the better. These are some ideas you can try and can grow gradually as you engage more in bigger tasks and meaningful activities with the local communities.

Sulyap sa Quiapo at Casa Consulado

Last August, the 125th anniversary of all-steel church, San Sebastian Basilica was celebrated through its weeklong festival, the Q-festival. Casa Consulado Museum and Library participates by hosting, in partnership with Kapitbahayan sa Kalye Bautista atbp, Inc., a lecture series entitled, “Sulyap sa Quiapo” (A Glance of Quiapo). This was also an opportunity to invite long time and fellow community advocates that has helped shaped Filipino culture and Quiapo community for the better, and to share again their stories and messages about their passion.

“Simula ng Maharlika Life” (The Beginning of Maharlika Life) by Mr. Ian Lucero

Young and creative local artist Mr. Ian Lucero, lead of Maharlika Life, was invited to share his passion for Filipino culture and the pre-hispanic colonial language, “Baybayin”. In the current trend of renewed interest in English calligraphy, his approach of presenting Baybayin with his creativity and graphic skills is as interesting even for the “cool” seeking youth or plain adventurous minds. Behind his passion is a movement to ignite interests for Filipino culture and pride starting from his social circle and eventually branching out to other communities. Inspired by Lucero’s previous experiences with Japanese calligraphy, the newly established group, Maharlika Life can be expected in public through their exhibits and creative enterprise.

Everyone is invited to visit the KASA BOIX this coming Friday, Feast of the Black Nazarene! There will be a small exhibit on the Black Nazarene and Quiapo at the Kasa Boix.

Save the Burke Apartments

One of the project of the Kapitbahayan sa Kalye Bautista atbp, “The Save the Burke Apartments” project is a mission to safeguard and protect the Burke Accessoria from impending demolition and to recognize it as heritage for the development and awareness of Quiapo. This is aligned with the group’s advocacy for heritage awareness through community efforts.

The rumors that a demolition of a heritage house in early 2014 prompted the KKB team to assess the situation; interviewing the local residents and tenants on its background history, a follow up structural assessment began with the help of local architects and city engineers.

It was discovered that the structure was indeed heritage as it belonged to the renowned Burke Family. The building was also labeled “condemned” by its owner but further evaluation showed that it was clearly stable and not worth condemnation.  Yet no signs of restraint from the owners, the team sent its document to the city hall to proclaim its identity as heritage and unadvisable for demolition.  The resolution was to be followed up.

Lakbay Lakaran : Ang Quiapo at mga Paniniwala

Organized by Kapitbahayan sa Kalye Bautista, an NGO composed of students and young professionals who aims to spread heritage awareness, the tour went through the back alleys and by-ways of Quiapo that you didn't know exists.

We visited Kasa Boix, where Pres. Quezon resided when he was still a law student. The magnificent San Sebastian church and its iron glory.

A Walking Tour for the Benefit of Kasa Boix Restoration and Pamana Basic Education Project

Some treasures hide where you least expect it. Beyond the bombardment of noise and scents that possess the metropolis, who would have thought, one can find a PAGODA proudly standing among the shanty towns? Or grand old mansions, the homes of the powerful, standing like dames with all their beauty and majesty standing ready for the curious and the observant? Who would have guessed that a treasure trove of history and culture hides among the lovely balusters and windows of the many homes, the Kasa Boix, Zamora Mansion and the Padilla House being just some of them, of this district? Or that succulent sights and delights await for those with a taste for color and adventure?

KKB Participation in #SelfiEscolta Heritage Street Festival

This event will be held along Calle Escolta last July 5, 2014 (Saturday), from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm. It aims to raise awareness and help boost local tourism by featuring various simultaneous activities to showcase Manila’s famed district. These include special guided tours that will take attendees to all the heritage buildings in the area.

Primarily, #selfiEscolta aims to create an online buzz about the district. This is by encouraging participants to post pictures and videos to their respective social media accounts with the official hashtag: #selfiEscolta.
