Facade of Kasa Boix with the Parol | (c) Jericho Carillo
At the dusk of December 13, 2014, on the scarcely lighted and quiet, concrete street of A. Bautista in the heart of the Quiapo district of Manila, an unusual scene unfolds. People gathered together, looking up in the direction of a parol hanging from an open-panelled sliding window of one of the quaint heritage houses that lined the street. The parol is Filipino, a holiday decoration made from yellow sheets of translucent paper and thin wooden sticks, crafted into a lantern in the shape of a star, enclosed in a circular frame wrapped with white paper crinkles. From the star’s two lower points hang frills of the same white paper. Facing the Philippine flag of red, white, yellow, and blue hung in front of the parol, ladies and gentlemen, young and old stood side by side, with their open palms on their chest, singing the National Anthem led by Ms. Justine Danielle Cabigting, who was clad in Filipiniana attire. Passersby who recognized the tune paid their respect by pausing and standing still until the music ended. The singing was followed by lighting of small sticks of fireworks called lusis as the crowd stood in a circle, attracting curious children from neighboring residences

Lakbay Lakaran Present: Bahay, Buhay, Baybayin

A Walking Tour for the Benefit of Kasa Boix Restoration and Pamana Basic Education Project and Mahal Project
Some treasures hide where you least expect it. Beyond the bombardment of noise and scents that possess the metropolis, who would have thought, one can find a PAGODA proudly standing among the shanty towns? Or grand old mansions, the homes of the powerful, standing like dames with all their beauty and majesty standing ready for the curious and the observant? Who would have guessed that a treasure trove of history and culture hides among the lovely balusters and windows of the many homes, the Kasa Boix, Zamora Mansion and the Padilla House being just some of them, of this district? Or that succulent sights and delights await for those with a taste for color and adventure?

Organized by Kapitbahayan sa Kalye Bautista, an NGO composed of students and young professionals who aims to spread heritage awareness, the tour went through the back alleys and by-ways of Quiapo that you didn't know exists.

Hermano Pule, also known as Apolinario de la Cruz
It was a clear sunny Sunday afternoon on August 25, 2014, when, in celebration of the 119th anniversary of the old KasaBoix, members and guests of KKBALI joined together in the peaceful hall inside the St. John of God Polyclinic along Hidalgo Street, Quiapo, Manila. Among the guests were the Peacemakers Circle, who arelong-time partners of the group and its endeavours. KKB organizers prepared a meriendacena session and relive the background for the inspiration of Lakbay Lakaran sa Quiapo, one of the most popular events of the group (Lakbay, which means to travel, and lakaran, which means to journey on foot).
