First in HIP : San Ignacio Church Reconstruction

San Ignacio Church is one of the oldest churches you will find inside the beautiful Walled City of Intramuros.

Right now the Intramuros Administration had preliminary plans of rebuilding the church into an ecclesiastical museum.,which is currently under construction.

San Ignacio Church of Intramuros, also called as Iglesia de San Ignacio.  It was completed in 1899 by architect Felix Roxas, Sr.

According to the nostalgia filipinas, "The San Ignacio Church was the source of pride and inspiration for the Society of Jesus, or more commonly known as the Jesuits. It was the Jesuits' "sueno dorado" or their golden dream. Manila's most skilled architects, artists and even workers shared one common goal to build something so majestic that significantly featured Filipino artistry and talent."

San Ignacio Church Architectural features

A mixture of architectural styles were implemented for over 300 years of effort to establish a church in honor of St. Ignatius of Loyola. From the Italianate Baroque Style of architect Gianantonio Campioni, it evolved into Neoclassical style of architect Felix Roxas, Sr and Renaissance Style through its interiors, by Isabelo Tampingco.

To my fellow Kapitbayahan, what can you say regarding San Ignacio Church Reconstruction? Care to share with us.

  5. I hope this project serves the original purpose which was to display the IA ecclesiastical collection. This consists of oversized objects such as a pulpit, retablos, carrosas, life-size santos and many more. It needs a tight security system, lighting and display techniques that meet museum conservation standards and professional care.

  6. From the current photos, it seems that the proportions of the interiors are not based on the original? It would be pointless to reconstruct them, let alone pay for highly skilled labor to replicate the fine carving. Why not spend precious government funds for professional display, care and security of the ecclesiastical collection which was put together for this particular building?
